What Is A Mast Cell Tumor In Cats?
A mast cell tumor (MCT) is a tumor that consists of mast cells, a type of white blood cell involved in allergy response and inflammation. They contain chemicals such as histamine and heparin, which are released during an inflammatory or allergic reaction. Mast cells are found in connective tissue such as the skin, respiratory system and intestinal tract. Mast cell tumors or a mastocytoma in cats can form plaques or nodules on the skin (usually on the head and neck, but they can be anywhere) or cause enlargement of the spleen and/or intestine. There are two forms of mast cell tumors in cats: cutaneous (skin) and visceral (within the internal organs, usually the intestines or spleen). MCTs are the most common splenic tumor, second most common skin tumor and third most common intestinal tumor in cats.*

Mast Cell Tumor Cat Symptoms
Mast cell tumors are often found in older cats, and Siamese cats are more predisposed. Symptoms of mast cell tumors in cats vary depending upon their location.
Cutaneous Symptoms (more commonly found on the head or ears)
Plaques (hard, flattened areas)
Nodules (small lumps)
Itching
Visceral (Splenic) Symptoms
Weight loss
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Lethargy
Visceral (Intestinal) Symptoms
Vomiting
Lethargy
Diarrhea
Bloody or black tarry (evidence of blood) stool
Diagnosing Mast Cell Tumors In Cats
A fine needle aspiration and cytology is the most common diagnostic tool for MCTs in cats. Around 50% of mast cell tumor cases in cats are the visceral form of the cancer. Diagnosing internal masses is more difficult and can require sedation and an ultrasound.
Most cutaneous mast cell tumors are removed surgically and have a relatively low reoccurrence rate. Treatment for visceral tumors usually includes surgery and chemotherapy. Cats with a visceral tumor in the spleen fare better than intestinal tumors, as the spleen can be removed, but spreading and metastasis in the intestines is harder to control.
Causes Of Mast Cell Tumors In Cats
The cause of mast cell tumors is still relatively unknown. There are genetic (species and breed specific) and environmental risk factors. MCTs in cats can recur, so using a proactive holistic approach can support your cat's immune system and its ability to manage this type of cancer. While any breed of cat can develop MCTs, they are most common in Siamese cats. There is also a genetic mutation in a protein that is related to the development of MCTs. The prognosis for cats with mast cell tumors depends upon the grade of the tumor, its location, whether the MCT has spread and the success of the surgery in completely removing it.
Puma: Kitty With Intestinal Mast Cell Tumor Is Doing Great Over A Year Later
"Ask Ariel has been an absolute life saver for my sweet cat, Puma. I’m so blessed to have found this awesome company online during a desperate search for quality holistic supplements for pets. During the past two years, Puma has been plagued with various health issues (immune system disease, bladder issues, asthma, and a malignant mast cell tumor in her small intestine that has metastasized into her lymph nodes. I purchased your following products and use them on an alternating basis: Silver Support, Immune Harmony, Power Probiotic, Immune Support Kit, Purrfect Pet CoQ10, AllerEaze, and Happy Paws Organic Hemp Extract. The supplements have significantly alleviated Puma’s illnesses. Besides my present cat, over the years I’ve had three others that have passed on as well as two beloved dogs. I often wonder if I had known about your company’s products when they were living, if they’d still be here today. I LOVE your products and their effectiveness and recommend them to everyone with ailing pets. Lastly but certainly not least, your customer service is extremely helpful, caring, personable, and top notch." - Carol, Ohio

AllerEaze - AllerEaze is the first line of defense for cats with mast cell tumors as it has been scientifically proven to naturally reduce your cat's histamine release. Mast cells are immune cells in the skin that respond to allergies and irritations in the skin. When they begin to multiply abnormally, they form a tumor. Mast cell tumors have high levels of histamine. Any manipulation of the tumor can cause a sudden release of histamine into the bloodstream. Veterinarians prescribe Benadryl to reduce the harmful effects of histamine on the pet. A sudden histamine release can cause swelling, vascular changes and inflammation. Quercetin is often considered nature's Benadryl, as it helps the body cope with the dangerous effects of excess histamine released by cancerous mast cells. AllerEaze can be used in addition to Benadryl to support a healthy immune response. AllerEaze in combination with Power Probiotic has been especially helpful for cats with mast cell tumors.
Power Probiotic - Power Probiotic is the best probiotic for pets! Backed by scientific research, this powerful multi-strain formula promotes the growth of good bacteria, supporting a healthy immune system. Power Probiotic is essential if your pet has taken antibiotics or steroids, which can kill off healthy bacteria, weakening your pet's immune response. Pure, safe and natural, Power Probiotic does not contain any fillers.
Happy Paws Organic Hemp Extract Oil - A few drops of this professional veterinary strength oil can help reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune system. Controlling inflammation is a core part of cancer treatment, and that is the main characteristic of this cat mast cell tumor CBD oil. The ingredients in Happy Paws are being researched for their beneficial effects on cancer. Anecdotal reports include reduced pain, inflammation and discomfort. Each 1oz bottle contains 550mg of full-spectrum hemp extract in an unflavored all-natural coconut oil base. 100% organic. Made in the USA.

NOT Drops - Natural homeopathic formula that fights infection and supports your pet's immune system. Controls harmful bacteria and restores gut flora balance, improving digestive symptoms and immune function. Gentle, easy to administer and safe for long-term use.
QUENT Drops - Natural homeopathic formula that fights viruses and infection. Targets the lungs and upper respiratory system. Use along with NotaSAN on alternating nights for best results.
Silver Immune Support - Silver Immune Support is an all-natural, easy to use remedy to help your pet recover from a bacterial infection or viral flare-up. It is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and well tolerated even by tiny pets.
Immune Harmony - A premium quality, patented blend of plant sterols and antioxidants. #1 Choice for pets with cancer. Unique one-of-a-kind plant sterol supplement--tolerated well by even the smallest pets. This pet vitamin has been successfully used in conjunction with chemotherapy and/or prednisone since 2005. The sterols contained in Immune Harmony have been shown in studies to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and immunomodulatory properties. No know toxicity has been found. The antioxidants protect the body from free radical damage along with an essential fatty acid complex that assists in the bioavailability of these health-promoting nutrients. Excellent value: One bottle will last almost four months depending upon the weight of your cat.
PureOcean Wild Omegas - PureOcean Wild Omegas are made from wild-caught sardines, anchovies & mackerel. They have a natural fishy flavor and many cats love the taste. Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are helpful for cats with mast cell tumors due to their anti-inflammatory properties. MCTs can trigger local inflammation and omega-3s can help reduce this inflammation and discomfort. Cats with mast cell tumors may experience changes in their skin and coat due to the cancer. Omega-3s can help maintain the health of the skin and fur, which may be helpful if surgery is needed to remove a tumor. Excellent value. One bottle lasts 4-6 months for cats.
